Many people don’t have a clear idea about what locum doctor is. The word ‘locum doctor’ has been derived from the Latin phrase “Locum Tenens”. This term can be roughly translated as substitute or stand-in. Locum doctors are also known as freelance doctors as they are not permanently associated with any medical institutes or hospitals. These doctors usually hold a temporary job in various medical offices. They work at their preferred locations.

Many of the medical students prefer to become locum doctors after completion of medical school. This offers them the scope to travel to different places and choose the location where they desire to practice permanently. For example a medical student has earned his degree from Scotland and works as a temporary doctor in a hospital in Ireland. Working on a temporary basis also helps them to gain experience which can help them in future if they wish to become a part of a famous hospital or medical institute. This is an added advantage of locum doctors.

This may sound surprising but statistics show that the majority of the hospitals have 50% to 80% doctors who work there as locum doctors. Hospitals hire them on the basis of contract. The locum doctors are usually connected to hospitals through different agencies. Most of the locum doctors are placed in various medical institutes by agencies. Just because these doctors are not permanent people think that they are not given good salary. But they actually get good salaries as well as other advantages. The agencies often help the locum doctors to find house in the same region where they work.

Locum doctors can be specialists as well as general practitioners. They are equally good as doctors who work on a permanent basis in various hospitals. Hiring locum doctors are beneficial for hospitals. When the regular doctors go on a vacation the locum doctors can take care of the patients. This means that the patients don’t need to look for alternatives when the regular doctors are absent. In fact locum doctors can handle emergency cases in the absence of the regular doctors.
